Revisiting Old Tracks with New Technology

Unfortunately, old 4-track mixes are old 4-track mixes. Unless you happen to have the machine and the original 4-track cassettes about, whatever you can find today (hopefully not decayed too much) is what you have to work with. And then you have to digitize the old analog recordings. Most of that work was done in 2003. So, even now, with newer software for mastering, I'm stuck with whatever I could grab from analog cassettes digitized with 2003 freeware. The exception being the studio material. But even that was to 16-track analog and comes pre-mixed. I was a bit surprised at how Jeff Lynne and the Threetles ended up producing the two Anthology-related singles from John's old demo recordings. of course, both songs (Free As a Bird, Real Love) turned out well, but Real Love, in its raw form featuring John's contribution, sounded fuller on the Imagine soundtrack. Recording in the 1990s - First Project

One of the interesting things about the 90s scene was trying to record. There was a very active North Carolina band scene in the 1990s coming out of an active scene in the 1970s and 80s. This led to a push to put out (primarily) cassettes. There were three basic purposes for this. The gin up interest among college aged people To send out to clubs to try and book gigs To send to the college radio stations Booking studio time was a possibility, but the expense often limited the use of these facilities to just a few tracks. Often, the expense ruled out even recording one track to satisfaction (overdubs, etc.). Looking back, just having one well-produced track would have been useful for radio station promotion, but hindsight is 20/20. The push (and desire) was to put out anywhere from a five to 10 song cassette. The most common route to this was the use of a 4-track cassette recorder. Recording in the 1990s - Second Project

We didn't do too much with out first cassette release. We had to reproduce it ourselves utilizing a double cassette recorder. As for "artwork," we settled on just a picture of the dusk sky I had taken printed on various colored paper using a copier machine. The insert (such as it was) was merely a song list and contact info (phone number). We got a local used record store to keep a stack at checkout. I don't know what any of us were thinking. For our next project, we set our sights a bit higher. We felt as though the newer material was stronger and our playing more confident. We also purchased a better 4-track recorder. The first project, we felt upon reflection, was a bit dry in production. This focus of the production would haunt us on our final two cassette projects until we finally moved to studio work and CDs.
